1st May 2004 represented an historic day for Europe with ten new
countries joining the European Union. These countries are the Czech
Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Malta,
Poland, the Slovak Republic, and Slovenia.Under the guidance
of Director- General Fabrizio Barbaso and the EU Commissioner for
Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, the enlarged European Union, now 25
in number, begins its journey towards a new age of stability and
prosperity for its member countries.
The scope and diversity of this new Europe is, simply,
breathtaking. The Treaty of Accession, incorporating the Treaty of
Nice (February 2002) provides the guidelines under which the
acceding countries have joined.
This is without doubt the most exciting and challenging single
development since the Schuman Declaration, which began the formation
of the European Union in 1950.
And so it is with pride that we present
– A Vision for European Enlargement.
marks this important occasion.
Whilst serving as a welcome to the
newly joining countries,
sets out realistic achievable goals for our European future.
In addition to an overview from Director-General Fabrizio Barbaso,
also provides a platform for business development between
companies in the existing member countries and the new member
states.
Through a series of specially commissioned reports
enables organisations in the acceding states to draw on the
expertise and experience of their counterparts in the West in order
to make the improvements necessary for them to compete effectively
within the enlarged EU.
Significantly, a number of major Western companies who can assist
in the economic and technical development present their own ideas
and solutions to the key challenges facing companies in the new EU
member states.
